Dry skin could be due to a genetic condition. Poor diet, nutritional deficiencies especially deficiencies of vitamin A and vitamin B can also contribute to dry skin. Environmental factors such as exposure to sun, wind and cold, chemicals, cosmetics or harsh soaps can also precipitate the condition. Dry skin is prone to skin disorders such as dermatitis, eczema and psoriasis.
It can be a sign of an under active thyroid too. Use non-detergent, neutral pH products to cleanse your skin such as mild soaps and body washes.
Follow a bath with an application of olive oil or moisturizer.
Do not use very hot water when bathing as it may further dryness of skin. Increase your consumption of water. Use a sun screen lotion with SPF 15 whenever you are out in the sun. The sun is responsible for most of the damage done to the skin. It causes dryness, wrinkles, and even rashes and blisters.
